The OpenAIRE Graph: A 360° Lens on Open Science
The OpenAIRE Graph is one of the largest and most interconnected global knowledge graphs, interlinking hundreds of millions of metadata records from trusted sources. As the authoritative source for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), it provides a comprehensive, FAIR-by-design view of research, covering not just publications but data, software, patents, and more.
A community-driven public good, the Graph is powered by openness, transparency, and interoperability, and enriches entities with insights like Fields of Science (FoS) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Fully open under a CC-0 license, its data and APIs are freely accessible, offering researchers, institutions, and innovators unparalleled access to the Open Science landscape.

Mission

Empower the global research community with an open, transparent, and interconnected knowledge graph that drives discovery, ensures data quality, fosters collaboration, and supports research assessment. Powering and powered by Open Science.

Key Achievements

1. Enhanced Metadata Quality and Linkages: Significantly improved metadata quality, strengthening links between publications, research data, and software. This includes the implementation of a new affiliation algorithms that ensures trusted, accurate results, enabling more effective monitoring of research outputs at both institutional and national levels.
2. Development of New APIs for Enhanced Accessibility: New APIs provide streamlined access to the Graph’s data. They are designed for diverse user needs, empowering researchers, institutions, and policymakers with actionable insights. The full release will take place in Q1 of 2025.
3. Selected as the EOSC Knowledge Graph Backbone: A core data source for the EOSC Knowledge Graph, further supporting the federation of EOSC Nodes across Europe. This milestone solidifies its role as a critical infrastructure for Open Science and reinforces its position as a trusted resource for Europe’s research ecosystem.

Organizational History

For nearly two decades, OpenAIRE has been collaborating closely with the European Commission to advance and promote Open Science principles on a global scale. These principles are founded in the belief that the free flow of knowledge is not only essential for advancing scientific discovery, but also crucial for our societies to thrive.
The popularity and adoption of Open Science has increased the availability of scientific and scholarly content. Scientific publications have traditionally been the main focus of Open Access, but datasets, protocols, methodologies, software, and workflows are becoming more openly available and accessible. Linking these heterogeneous research objects in a semantic manner is critical in order to provide a wealth of information that researchers can use to accelerate scientific discovery and collaboration, as well as to help research executives assess and comprehend the R&I landscape. The OpenAIRE Graph exists to provide such a context.
