GBIF—the Global Biodiversity Information Facility—is an international network and data infrastructure that aims to provide anyone, anywhere, free and open access to data about all forms of life on Earth.
The GBIF network of formal member countries and organizations and more than 2,600 data-publishing institutions share common standards, best practices and open-source tools enabling them to share information about where and when species have been recorded. This knowledge derives from many different sources, including museum specimens, field survey and monitoring data, DNA metabarcodes and citizen science. The International Science Council's Committee on Data (CODATA) has called GBIF.org “the most comprehensive, openly available, application-agnostic (most unbiased), easiest-to-use, and modern access point to known digital species occurrence data." This data infrastructure currently supports the findings of seven peer-reviewed articles each day across all domains of science.

Mission

To mobilize the data, skills and technologies needed to make comprehensive biodiversity information freely available for science and decisions addressing biodiversity loss and sustainable development.

Key Achievements

GBIF is “the most comprehensive, openly available, application-agnostic (most unbiased), easiest-to-use, and modern access point to known digital species occurrence data” (CODATA). Data from our network are used across all domains of science, and in recent years the use and reliance of scientific research on GBIF continues to grow across taxonomic, geographic and nation dimensions. GBIF-mediated data also supports policy across scales, for example, providing evidence for IUCN Red List assessments and contributing directly or indirectly to metrics and indicators under multiple frameworks, including to at least eight of the 23 targets under the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Our capacity development training has upskilled hundreds of data professionals in dozens of countries, and TNFD has endorsed our network and infrastructure as the primary channel for corporate nature data exchange, advancing their Recommendation 5 and contributing to Global Biodiversity Framework Target 15.

Policies & Governance

Governance Summary

GBIF is governed by a Governing Board made up of one representative from each member country and organization, which meets annually to make collective decisions, though only representatives from countries making financial contributions have voting rights. Between Board meetings, an Executive Committee acts on the Board's behalf, overseeing Secretariat performance, budget management, and implementation of the Strategic Plan. The Governing Board is further supported by three standing advisory committees—the Science Committee, Budget Committee, and Participant Node Managers Committee—as well as ad hoc task groups convened to address specific biodiversity data challenges.
