DHIS2 is an open source, web-based platform for data collection, management, visualization, and integration. It is most commonly used in the health sector as a health management information system (HMIS)—and increasingly for electronic health records—but it is usable in any sector due to its flexible, customizable design and its powerful set of modular software features. It enables users and policy makers to generate analysis from live data in real time, and is designed to function even in environments where internet access is limited.

Mission

The longstanding vision and mission of the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo reflect our core values and commitment to collaboration with country-level partners to address local needs and have guided our work with DHIS v1 and DHIS2 since our project began in 1994.
Vision: Low- and middle-income countries and country-level stakeholders have strong, sustainable information systems and architectures that support the achievement of national development goals.
Mission: Work in solidarity with countries to strengthen sustainable, locally governed information systems and digital infrastructure, empowering the public sector to make data-driven decisions that improve people’s lives.

Key Achievements

DHIS2 is now used in more than 135 countries around the world. This includes 75+ low- and middle-income countries where it is used by the ministry of health as a locally owned health management information system, supporting the collection of health service and disease data down to the health facility level and facilitating the analysis and use of that data by health workers and stakeholders up to the national level. Taken together, data in these national DHIS2 systems covers public health programs for a population of more than 3.2 billion people.
DHIS2's role as a foundational component of digital health architecture enables countries to building on to improve climate resilience, with 16+ countries integrating new tools for climate data integration and predictive modeling in existing DHIS2systems.
The built-in flexibility of DHIS2 has led to its increasing use outside of the health sector. It is now the fastest-growing education management system in Africa, used by 12 countries.

Investment in DHIS2 through the HISP Centre at UiO supports our mission in a number of ways. Financial support enables the ongoing maintenance and modernization of the DHIS2 software and supporting global resources, ensuring that countries continue to have access to a robust and secure platform for their information systems. It also catalyzes the development of new features and functionalities -- and expansion of DHIS2 into new domains or sectors -- through HISP's established action research methodology, which grounds software development in a co-design process with local stakeholders in LMICs. Investment also supports local capacity building for DHIS2, digitalization, and data use through development of resources, training, and hands-on mentoring through the HISP network.
